Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
I am back, as I expected, since Sept. 29th deeply in the preparation for new work, having met all my patients or rather pupils yesterday. I am writing you under the still fresh impressions of our meeting which would have been completely satisfactory had not two darker spots somewhat diminished its splendour. The first was the evident deterioration of Sachs' being and behaviour and the second your condition. I found you easily tired, not lively and bad looking and had to wonder, why you disappeared every day once or twice without explaining your absence. I am in need to be assured that nothing serious is the matter with you. It is likely that I am overanxious on your behalf, and while I hope you will acknowledge my friendship as a motive for my care I am sure you recognise, that my appreciation of your personal importance for our common cause is for much in the matter.
This point apart I have a favour to ask from you. I wrote yesterday to Lissa & Kann to send me no more reports of our account, as the government is likely to spy on letters and to confiscate all foreign valours in posession of an Austrian, also threatens heavy fines on the concealment of such. We are simply in a condition of self-defense—Notwehr—against an uncapable and blindly struggling legislation. So I pray you send me a card every time you get a report from L.[issa] & K.[ann], mentioning in slightly disguised words the arrival of some sum from some one. The next I expect is the payment of $997 or Fl. 3.205, sent by my nephew Bernays to Lippmann, Rosenthal & Co. instead [of] to Lissa & Kann, as royalties of the translation. Two lines on an open card, f.e.: Bernays gives the number 3.205, will do and such events cannot occur very often, in no case more frequently than once a month.
Varendonck mentions in a letter that he expected you at Brussels and was very sorry to miss you. I donot know what right he had to wait for you there.
My daughter was very
