Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
I am glad you feel so comfortable in your new home, I did not know it was so near to your office.
Life is rich in hardship here. I feel 9 hours of work are too many for me but as yet I see no way of getting a relief. The Americans will stay until end of January or February; the next people I have given a promise are Dr. Asch from N.Y.,1 Mrs. Riviere who insists on coming here and a Swiss lady doctor who is waiting for many months.
Rickman is hardly pressed in his analysis, in fact I opened your intentions to him in order to stirr up his spirits, as he is a sure man and a good one. James Strachey has not yet overcome his scepticism but his wife is progressing nicely. Among the Americans Oberndorf is the worst, he is still a puzzle to me, he appears to be stupid and arrogant, and yet why should a man who was considered so brilliant and successful, have taken up analysis unless his head or his heart had some share in it. The course of lectures I had arranged for the English people proves a success; Rank impressed all of them immensily. They have invited Abraham, Ferenczi and Roheim to give them 1-2 lectures each. Rickman and Strachey, who now are helping Hiller, are both of them extremely annoyed at the quality of the contributions to Nr. 3/4 and the low standard of the translation contained therein. I donot know what the part of their ambition may be in their criticism, as I did not see the manuscr nor get the proofs. But it is likely they should not be a
