[7 April 1923]1

Dear Jones,
Who is Israel Levine? I never was so much pleased by a book on a ψα matter as by his Unconscious.2 A rare bird if he is a philosopher. I want to know the man better.
Yours affectionately
Freud
Yours essays are a stately contribution.3
Date of postmark.
Levine (1923). Israel Levine (1893-1988) joined University College, Exeter, as lecturer in the department of philosophy in 1923; would become professor and head of the department, and dean of the Faculty of Arts. In his later writings he examined some of the great Jewish contributions to philosophy, including the works of Spinoza, Marx, and Bergson; see his Faithful Rebels: A Study in Jewish Speculative Thought (London: Soncino Press, 1936).
