Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
After having lost a week or so by illness (operation) I hasten to answer your several questions.
No I have no criticism of your paper to offer and would not like your waiting for my suggestions. I think you are right as far as you go, but you have not gone far enough, as you know. I try not to interfere with the intellectual independence of my friends, and so I push back my criticism on their work unless they have not fallen in gross errors what happily rarely is the case.
Mr. Money-Kyrle is progressing continuously. I think he has learned to listen and even to believe a little. The construction of his prehistoric case is complete and he is wont to lean on it for explanation of present situations. But the fact is, he has not yet penetrated to recollection, all his adherence is only [a] matter of reason and the practical effect of the treatment cannot be guessed. So I am ready to continue work with him, if he returns. He will leave on June 1st for an examination in Cambridge and much will depend on the result of it. I am sure he will call on you.
I detected 2 months ago a leukoplastic growth on my jaw and palate right side, which I had removed on the 28th. I am still out of work and cannot swallow. I was assured of the benignity of the matter but as you know, nobody can guarantee its behaviour when it be permitted to grow further. My own diagnosis had been epitelioma, but was not accepted. Smoking is accused as the etiology of this tissue-rebellion.
Hoping you and your family are all right,
I am affectionately yours
Freud
