Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
I am deeply disappointed that you should be ill too thinking it a prerogative of my age and condition. But I expect you will soon have recovered strength and be the former man again or become a still better one.
To your praising my behaviour at Lavaroni I have only to reply that I am too old to give up old friends. If younger people would oftener think of that change in life they would find it easier to keep up good relations among themselves.
Now I hope you will drop the affair and I will do whatever I can to influence Rank in the sense of kindness and tolerance.
I spent a splendid time at Rome in the company of my daughter who did really show to her advantage at this occasion. Yet I am still far from complete recovery and expecting the final judgment of the man who operated on me.
Sept. 26th. It has now been decided that I have to undergo a new operation, a partial resection of the upper jaw as the growth reappeared on this ground.
