British Psycho-Analytical Society
27 May 1925
London
Dear Professor,
The American Psycho-Analytical Society which was of course founded as a branch of the international seems to have undergone some irregular ‘Declaration of Independence’ during the war and ever since there has been much doubt about its status. The practical result was that the members, except those who happened to be members of the New York Society, felt themselves under no obligation to subscribe either to the Journal or to the International Association funds. Ever since I heard of this state of affairs I have been exercising pressure to remedy it and I now hear that at the annual meeting of the Society this month they agreed to regard themselves as a branch of the international with the corresponding obligations. The council of the Society is predominantly composed of men favourable to us, but as a sign of their ambivalence they have elected as President Dr. Trigant Burrow,1 who is very vague and muddle-headed, far more Jungian than Freudian. Logically his name should now appear with those of all the other Society Presidents on the title page of the Zeitschrift and the Journal, and this is the delicate question I am submitting for your consideration.
I am also sending a copy of this letter to Abraham.
With cordial greetings,
Yours sincerely,
[Ernest Jones]
Burrow, replacing Coriat, was elected president at the annual meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association, 12 May 1925, Richmond, Virginia.
