British Psycho-Analytical Society

London
My dear Professor,
I was exceedingly disappointed to hear of your change of plans as regards the Congress, for your letter was the first intimation I had and I had fully counted on meeting you there. It is fifteen months since I saw you last and I will try to make it possible for me to come to the Semmering either before or after the Congress.
I knew that Melanie Klein's work has met with considerable opposition in Vienna and also in Berlin, though more at first than later. I regard the fact as indicating nothing but resistance against accepting the reality of her1 conclusions concerning infantile life. Prophylactic child analysis appears to me to be the logical outcome of psycho-analysis.
I sent of course the copies of the ‘Selbstdarstellung’ to Lords Balfour and Haldane. A formal acknowledgement came from the former but nothing from the latter.
With my best wishes for a pleasant and beneficial holiday,
Yours always,
Ernest Jones.
“Her” is crossed out and “your” is written in the margin in an otherwise typewritten letter.
