3 March 1927
Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
Was it you, who sent me—years ago—a number of the Burlington Magazine containing a representation of a 12th century Moses who is grasping his beard just the same way I interpolated into the statue of Michelangelo? Please answer me at once. I have written a short supplementary note to my essay, which is to appear very soon in the new French psychoanalytic Journal.1
Yours affectionately
Freud
See letter 309. In Freud (1927b) Jones's contribution is explicitly acknowledged; a photograph of the statue in question is included in S.E., 13 (facing p. 237). Freud's piece first appeared as “Appendice (1927) au Moïse de Michel-Ange,” trans. E. Marty, rev. M. Bonaparte, Revue francaise de psychanalyse, 1 (1927): 148.
