18 February 1928
Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
I hasten to thank you for your sending the science primer on ΨA before reading it, promising to give you my impression of it hereafter. A tedious conjunctivitis at one eye interferes with my facility of reading and writing, just at a time when I have the proofs of the translation of Selbstdarstellung and Laienanalyse, both done by Princess Marie, on hand. (Their titles in French are “Ma vie et la PsA” and “La PsA et la médicine”.)1
Apart [from] this trouble I am all right. We had a good deal of correspondence about the Swiss “Sturm im Wasserglas” [tempest in a teapot]. C. G. Jung is to give a public lecture here, on Wednesday next, I do'nt think I will attend it. So I will miss an excellent opportunity of hearing about the Structure of the Soul from a first-rate source.2
No, I know nothing of efforts to secure me the Nobel Prize and I do not appreciate them. Who is fool enough to meddle in this affair?3
Affectionately yours
Freud
The French translations of Freud (1925d, 1926e) appeared in Marie Bonaparte, Ma vie et la psychoanalyse: La psychanalyse et la médecine (Paris: Gallimard, 1928).
Jung's lecture “Struktur der Seele,” as reported in the Neue Freie Presse, 23 February 1928, was delivered before the conservative group Kulturbund.
Heinrich Meng spearheaded the campaign on this occasion; see Gay (1988, p. 456).
