Dear Jones,
I am able to read again, and the first project was your essence of psychoanalysis.1 To have undertaken so difficult and thankless a task is of great merit. I will not withhold several minor criticisms from you.
The end of the first paragraph made a fearful impression on me. The truth lies in the middle, they say. But both extremes are an equally gross condemnation of analysis.2
I seem to remember that you were repeatedly uncertain when you described Breuer's case. This time it is a mistake to say that she had to revive a forgotten memory “in a waking state”;3 it always happened only under hypnosis.4
