Dear Professor,
I am writing to ask your opinion on the following proposal. The Professor of Philosophy at Harvard University has asked me to edit, and write an Introduction for, what in America is known as a “source book” of your writings. The idea is that I should go through them all and reduce them, by making suitable omissions, to one-ninth of their present size, a very considerable piece of work as you may imagine. The publishers, Scribner's, will of course deal with the question of copyright and royalty. Before deciding, I should like to have your opinion on the advisability of the proposal. I should say that they have already done this for various of the ancients, e.g. Plato, Schopenhauer, etc. and are now intending to do the same with a few modern great men in the same series.
With my best wishes to you all for the coming New Year,
Yours always,
[Ernest Jones]
