Dear Professor,
At last, after a long interval, I take up my pen to write to you. I had fixed in my mind to do so as soon as the British Medical Association Committee should come to an end, so that I could report on its results. But this has been adjourned again and again and my expectations repeatedly disappointed until yesterday. I will say no more on this subject because I am circulating an official statement on it which should reach Anna the day after this letter.
At all events I contributed to the peace I know you like on your birthday. We celebrated it here and I hope it passed off as satisfactorily as we all wished from this distance.
The past months since Christmas have been among the hardest in my life. The record is soon told. Private sorrow from the year before, a very painful illness, two attacks of influenza, a basis of ten analyses daily which I have not missed once, endless Society business and committee meetings, two scientific papers, one for the Royal Society of Medicine here, the other (in French) for the Sorbonne last month,1 a week on the Riviera, and above all the harrassing anxiety and almost daily labour of the B. M. A. Committee which has at last met with as much success as could be expected in the circumstances.
