Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
It is a relief to have a chat with you in these wretched times. My son Ernst is right, I have no nephew called Marcel. He may be called Freud; the name is not as rare as one might wish. Even in Vienna there is a Prof. Freud, who is not related to us. Incidentally, if the etchings were good, the fraud is almost forgivable. Worse things are happening these days.
I like to hear that you predict success for my son Ernst in London. He certainly seems decided on settling there. His youngest, Clemens, a delightful fellow with whom he last visited us, said literally: “How different things would be for me today if I were an Englishman!” It would be nice if this wish were granted to him.1
I have read Ophuijsen's letter to you as well as your reply. Your counsel to maintain diplomatic calm is certainly justified, but W.-N.'s behavior remains disgusting and may well embitter such a serious man as Ophuijsen.2 The poor exiles never have it too easy anywhere.
We too will get our fascism, party dictatorship, elimination of opposition, applied anti-Semitism. But we should retain our independence, and the peace treaty makes it legally impossible to strip minorities of their rights. It won't be pleasant, but we will be able to stay in Austria. Of course the future still depends on what will develop out of the witch's cauldron in Germany. You probably already know that v. Hattingberg obtained the lectureship in psychotherapy in Berlin. An aristocrat, Aryan, fool, blockhead, and a bad sort, in other words in every respect the right man for the post. (Enclosure!)3 It will probably depend on his mercy what kind of existence if any analysis will lead in Germany. Perhaps you remember him from the Munich Congress in 1913.4
Sprott is probably the darling of Lytton Strachey who visited me once in Gastein. I am not writing anything at the moment, was never before so far from producing anything. I want to keep August totally free. “Too bad”5 that you
