26 November 1933
Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
I am writing these lines not quite spontaneously, however, not against my will or interest. They concern Th. Reik, who is at present in Vienna, very discouraged and without prospects, and who absolutely demands that
I interest you in his fate. It is true that he made a particularly valuable contribution in his application of analysis to a certain field. This is the basis of his claim for material help, so that he can continue his work. One should note that the exigencies of these times have not had a very favorable effect on his mental peculiarities. Naturally it would be primarily my responsibility not to let him founder, but you know how limited my means are, how they are disappearing under the financial pressures, and how uncertain I am about the time span in which I can continue to earn a living. It would therefore be very welcome if you as president of the I.P.V. can find a way of helping him. I am recuperating slowly, and hope you and your family are well.
Cordially yours,
Freud
