International Psycho-Analytical Association
27 June 1935
London
Dear Professor,
It was such a pleasure to receive your kind letter a couple of weeks ago. I am sure you are right in the inference you draw from the Royal Society of Medicine's action which we were all very delighted to hear of. This is confirmed by the fact that it was a spontaneous action on their part, no analyst being concerned in it, and that the proposal was quite unanimously accepted. Though it does not add to the actual number of letters after your name we shall be able to print on the next book ‘Hononary1 Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine’.
This brings me to the immediate purpose of my letter, namely, to ask you whether you will agree to sell to the Hogarth Press for inclusion in our International Psycho-Analytical Library series the English rights of your Autobiography and ‘Hemmung, Symptom und Angst’.2 I have seen your excellent postscript of the Autobiography and presume that Strachey will deal with it.3 The ‘Hemmung, Symptom und Angst’ would of course need a proper new translation before we publish it and I hope that we should be able to persuade Strachey to undertake this also. So by and by we shall recover the lost ground in providing a worthy translation of your work; it seems strange that we should be behind Spain in this respect.
I think Wälder was wise in postponing his visit to London till the autumn so as to have more time for a full preparation.4 It is puzzling me to know what will happen if he ‘geht versichert weg’—an allusion I am sure you will understand—but I suppose the contingency is not very likely to arise.5
