23 April 1938
Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear Jones,
Among the many who have turned to you concerning entry into England is also Dr. Maxim Steiner.1 I beg you to take up his case. I cannot claim that he is important as an analyst, but it should be considered that he is a special friend of mine, has been our specialist (dermatology) for many years, and moreover is one of the oldest, i.e., earliest members of the Vereinigung.
We are finding, of course, that the winding up of our affairs here is proceeding very slowly.
With cordial greetings and the wish to see you soon.
Yours,
Freud
Maxim Steiner, member of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society since 1908. Freud (1913e) is a preface to his book. For his role as Freud's physician, see Schur (1972, pp. 350-351). Steiner emigrated to London and became a full member of the British Psycho-Analytical Society in 1939. He died shortly thereafter in 1942.
