Dear Professor,
This critical moment seems an appropriate one for me to express once more my personal devotion to you, my gratitude for all you have brought into my life and my intense sympathy for the suffering you are enduring. When England last fought Germany, twenty-five years ago, we were on opposite sides of the line, but even then we found a way to communicate our friendship to each other. Now we are near to each other and united in our military sympathies. No one can say if we shall see the end of this war, but in any case it has been a very interesting life and we have both made a contribution to human existence—even if in very different measure.
With my warmest and dearest regards
Yours always affectionately
Ernest Jones.
