Vienna, July 27, 1872
Dear Berganza,
How can you tell that you were the first?1 And, if you can, why blame my sisters for telling me? Are you mocking me? Or is it true? I wish it were, and thank providence for having removed all the causes you might have had for killing yourself. To think that you were “the chosen and the first without knowing it.” How well off you are! You have just visited your aunt and I have not seen Ichth. for two weeks.

Querido Berganza
