Vienna, February 3, 1880
My dear Edward
I have made up my mind to stay at home and work and to let Mr Hansen1 puzzle our dear fourteen friends, as he can. I am almost sure the interruption of an evening might put me out and destroy my artificial systematic structure of study. Let my Mr Hansen come when I am rather more independent and give him my best love. Hope you will keep your mind sceptical and remember ‘wonderful’ is an exclamation of ignorance and not the acknowledgment of a miracle.
Yours for ever
Sigmund Freud
Postcard; in English
Probably the hypnotist Carl Hansen (1833-1897), one of whose demonstrations Freud witnessed as a student.
