Dear Berganza,
Two of the best teeth in my mouth have just broken, which will cost me a lot of money to repair, and this is one of the reasons why
I did not go to your rendezvous at the café, being very short of cash. Besides, I have taken a vow not to play tarok again before I become a doctor,1 what with the waste of time and the amount of money I spend on it. Two of my courses begin tomorrow, and in the evenings I shall be at home studying and smoking the pipe I have bought myself. So I expect you any evening that suits you best, except for Tuesday the fifth, for I have been unable to get out of a meeting with Paneth that day.
With greetings, I am your faithful

¡Querido Berganza!
