Correspondence of the Spanish Academy 1881
Vienna, January 24, 1881
Dear Berganza,
I have two pieces of news to report, one from close to home and disagreeable, the other from far away and happier. To start with the
sad news, the two noble knights prepared to put fortune to the test by my side1 could again not be found today, so that I must lose a further week, and, if fate is [not] kinder to me, I shall not be able to call myself Doctor before the middle of next month. I am biting my nails and keep telling myself “Tu l'as voulu, Georges Dandin.”2
Now for the happier news. My niece Anna from Odessa, whom you know, has married a Russian railway engineer and everyone over there agrees on the suitability of the match. Now you know all the news I know, and you are invited to come over one of these evenings, as I shall always be at home.
With greetings I remain
your faithful Cipion
dog at the hospital of Seville
member of the Spanish Academy etc.
