This book was the idea of Joseph Sandler who, with his customary originality and flair, thought of its theme and oversaw the early stages of its development. Robert Michels and Joseph Sandler commissioned the authors and drew up the plan for the book. Sandler's untimely death, in October 1998, left the project without its leader. Dr. Michels asked Peter Fonagy to join with him in putting the final touches to the manuscript, an honour which he willingly accepted. Kathy Leach, Editorial Assistant in the Psychoanalysis Unit at University College London, the unit Dr. Sandler founded, did much of the editorial work on the manuscript. Hence, the final product is the culmination of all our efforts, the work of a team rather than the work of a single individual. And appropriately so. The psychoanalyst whose contributions this book celebrates, Arnold Cooper, is an individual who throughout his rich career has been able to bring people together to work with a common aim, for a joint purpose. His corpus speaks to the importance Dr. Cooper has always attached to collaboration, not just among psychoanalysts, but also among those from different disciplinary backgrounds whose commitment is to the study of the human mind. The contributors to this volume and the editors pay homage to his contribution, not just by saying what he did, but also by doing as he said.
