14 March 1911, Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
Supplementary items for which I had no room yesterday (letter purposely predated).
First proofs from Deuticke today.
Bleuler's answer today. His usual procrastination disguised as modesty. I have already answered him, offering him, as a continuation of his Apologia, the job of reviewing the “better” (!) articles of our opponents for the Zentralblatt.
First sign of life from Australia. The secretary of the Neuropsychiatrie Section of the “Australasian Medical Congress,” Sydney 1911, a Dr. Davidson1 (the name at least sounds familiar) introduces himself
as a subscriber to the Jahrbuch and supporter of Ψ A. He asks me, “since my teachings are still completely unknown in Australia,” for an introductory article to be published in the Transactions of the Congress.2 — The most recent exotic specimen was Sutherland from Saugor (India), who called on me ten days ago. He had translated a part of The Interpretation of Dreams; a magnificent Scotsman. Behind him there is another who has been ΨAnalysing the Hindus and believes that in India as elsewhere the libido is at the bottom of all mental “states”: a Dr. Barkley (?) Hill,3 son of the famous London syphilologist. This younger man is also going to publish soon.
What about your trip to Berlin? It interests me even more than the one to the Brussels Congress.
Can you do anything with this formula: the symbol is an ucs. substitute for a cs. concept; symbol formation is the initial stage of concept formation, just as repression is the forerunner of judgment?
Most cordial regards,
