25 March 1911, Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
Rank has sent you the results of the vote on the location of the Congress. The Viennese are over-determined by their wish to see something new. Not a single vote for Nuremberg. In choosing Munich, they have doubtless forgotten how overcrowded it is in the autumn. A Swiss city would certainly have attracted many of them if not for the great distance. Conclusion: exert your authority! I am aware that the situation in America has also been on your mind.
Criticism in our own camp will be very necessary. Stekel is having Adler review his book for the Zentralblatt;1 I can't prevent this because they are the editors. But we still have the Jahrbuch. I should be glad to review it myself, but I find it hard to take a moderate tone and perhaps I am too authoritarian. Maybe you can find a serious and well-informed critic. I could suggest one nearby. And we inside our circle really ought to come to a decision about Adler, before he is held up to us by outsiders. His things strike me as more and more stupid as time goes on.
I can see no reason to give up my plan to visit you before the Congress. The only uncertainty has to do with the date; our summer plans are very complicated and are not yet fully settled. I shall be spending the first three weeks at Karlsbad, where I shall have leisure for working. In the first half of September I should like (for anonymous reasons)2 to take a little trip with my wife.
What to do about Australia? I have been wondering if we couldn't write a short programmatic article for their programme; a few pages extracted from our Worcester Lectures—and if we mightn't do it together. I could write something and send it to you to complete or modify; then we could sign it together. Write to me about it after your little trip, for which I wish you and your wife the best of weather and spirits.
Very cordially yours, FREUD
