Central Hotel,1 Berlin, 31 March 1911
Dear Professor Freud,
A few words in haste! Just before leaving Zürich I had a telephone call saying that Honegger had committed suicide with morphine.2 He was to have reported for military duty the next day. The sole motive was to avoid a psychosis, for he did not under any circumstances want to give up living in accordance with the pleasure principle.
I have been well received here and though I haven't seen Kraus I found his whole clinic infected with Ψ A. I think things in Berlin are off to a good start. I have had three consultations at the Charité.
Kindest regards,
Most sincerely yours, JUNG

On 28 March, of an injection of a concentrated morphine solution, at the cantonal clinic at Rheinau (Cant. Zürich), where he had gone to work as assistant physician on 1 Feb. (See Walser, op. cit. in 148 J n. 3.) / Minutes, III, report no reference to Honegger's death at the Vienna Society. It was, however, mentioned in the Bulletin, no. 5 (Apr. 1911), p. 5.
