Dear friend,
Yes, I am on holiday now, torturing myself “in obedience to the laws”1 in the hope of recovering my so-called health. If my irritation
in the following seems excessive, do please consider my abnormal body chemistry.
I know who manufactures these rumours. It's not hard to guess. Adler in person, and I also know why. In writing you things which he knew you could easily refute, he was counting on the automatism of good manners. He knew you would say: no, on the contrary, sorry to hear it. And you let yourself be taken in, which puts me in a difficult situation.
Adler concocted his “rumour” from two private though not confidential remarks of mine: 1): that the journal suffered from the fact that he as editor had no personal contact with you and the other foreign contributors; and 2): that I ought to have taken steps long ago, at the time when he penned his inadmissible observation to the effect that the “Little Anna” material was “consistently slanted”2 and therefore its mythologies were inconclusive. His rumour has no other basis. And now he hears from you that you regret his resignation, regard it as a loss, etc. From this he will now draw capital; he has obtained a statement of your disapproval of my treatment of him, he has brought us into conflict with one another, etc. Now that the harm is done, I can only request that in future you handle Adler, who undoubtedly has more tricks up his sleeve, with psychiatric caution.
His saying that the better element is resigning from the Society3 with him is of course nonsense, as you will see for yourself.
I enclose his letter.4
I have seen Bjerre's paper; it is very interesting, though not quite clear. You must really rake Bleuler over the coals, Forel deserves no bouquets for what he says about ΨA in his book.5 You have aroused my curiosity about the Jahrbuch.
Dr. van Emden is continuing his course in ΨA with me, so I have company half the day. The other half is spent in the
