Karlsbad, 21 July 1911
Dear friend,
Your letter has appeased my irritation but at the same time aroused my anxiety. You must not take me as a model; on the contrary, you must arm yourself, before it is too late, against the dragon Practice. Give your charming, clever, and ambitious wife the pleasure of saving you from losing yourself in the business of money-making. My wife often says she would be only too proud if she were able to do the same for me. As it is, I am forced by circumstances, there isn't much left to be saved. In No. 9 of the Zentralblatt you will find an example of name-forgetting that occurred in a conversation between Ferenczi and me;1 to you, I am sure, the explanation will reveal an additional meaning that would not be apparent to others.2 (Giovane-Veterano). It is the old mythological motif: The old god wants to be sacrificed and rise again rejuvenated in the new one. I hope that you will fare better than I have and not just copy me. Your taste for money-making already worried me in connection with your American dealings. On the whole, it will prove to be good business if you forgo ordinary pursuits. Then, I am sure, extraordinary rewards will come your way.
Thank you for communicating your programme; the only item you seem to have omitted is your military service. I shall use your Zürich address as you wish, but please make a note of the fact that after the 31st of this month I shall be (not at Oberbozen but) at:
Klobenstein am Ritten/Tyrol3
Hotel Klobenstein
It is half an hour further on the same plateau.
I have received the invitations to the Congress. My cure in Karlsbad is not an unmingled pleasure. I have decided to endow a votive tablet if only I get rid of all the ailments I have acquired here. However, it looks as if I were going to come off with some benefit.
With kind regards to you and your family,
Yours ever, FREUD
