12 October 1911, Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
Rather tired after battle and victory, I hereby inform you that yesterday I forced the whole Adler gang (six of them)1 to resign from the Society. I was harsh but I don't think unfair. They have founded a new society for “free” ΨA2 as opposed to our unfree variety, and are planning to put out a journal of their own,3 etc.; nevertheless they insisted on their right to stay with us, naturally in order to provide themselves parasitically with ideas and with material to misrepresent. I have rendered such a symbiosis impossible. The same evening we enrolled three new members, Stärcke and Emden in Holland and Fräulein Dr. Spielrein who turned up unexpectedly.4 She said I didn't look malicious, as she had imagined I would.
My practice is not quite complete, only seven patients so far. Consequently I have not yet mobilized intellectually; for instance, I have not yet resumed my studies on religion. Besides, there have been all sorts of chores connected with the Society and individual members. My letter to Specht was simply a sharp restatement of the famous question: “Why didn't you say it sicil, aloud?”5 If he doesn't apply to you now as I have suggested, it will prove that the whole thing is a fraud.
Eder in London has just sent me the first ΨA paper to have been read before the British Medical Association (British Medical Journal, 30 Sept. 1911).6
