20 October 1911, Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
Unlike you, I already feel rather tired after only a month of this worldly bustle, especially as not all of it is lucrative. Two-thirds of my time is accounted for, but I still have nothing for my hungry chicks
in the Ψ Atical nest. I am writing to you chiefly as a precaution; I hear you are corresponding with Stekel, and I want to assure you in advance that the difficulties and messes he may be making for you are none of my doing, though perhaps you know me well enough and are familiar enough with the circumstances to realize this without my telling you. I merely wanted you to begin your presidential statements in the first number.1 Further, I shall give you my full support if you don't want to accept the smallest print for the Bulletin.2 You see how petty one becomes when one is reduced to such company as I am here in the Vienna Society. Last Wednesday it was again brought home to me how much of the most elementary educational work remains to be done.3
I have run into unexpected difficulties with the new journal. Deuticke, who at first seemed enthusiastic, has brusquely withdrawn. Now I am humbly and gloomily awaiting an answer from two other publishers; one of them is Joh. Amb. Earth. The psychology of religion is getting ahead very slowly. I find it hard to read after the day's demands on my receptivity, and Frazer is so long-winded, so full of details that one must immediately forget.
Did a Professor Schrader4 from Vienna call on you during the summer (spring)?
I was very much interested in the news about Pfister. ΨA is beginning to shape destinies.
I presume you are eagerly looking forward to your return to civilian life. With kind regards,
Yours ever, FREUD
