18 February 1912, Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19
Dear friend,
I was very glad to receive a letter from you. I am not fond of breaking habits and find no triumph in it.1 Wrenched out of the habit, I no longer remember what I have told you, and besides, I still want to be considerate of your work.
I have edited Bjerre's piece of confusion and delivered it to the
printer. It is not very pleasant to have to publish such muddles. I am enclosing a prospectus of Imago (there are still mistakes). I should have been glad to see your name figure prominently in this journal and the Zentralblatt, but instead you hide behind your religious-libidinal cloud. It seems to me that you are still giving me too much precedence. In my paper on the Horror of Incest I have stressed, to your satisfaction, I hope, the part played by you and your followers in the development of ΨA.2 I myself am busy with my study of Taboo. I have not been consistently well, my daily practice has prevented me from doing much good work. I have had to write an article in English on the unconscious for the Society for Psychical Research;3 of course it contains nothing new.
Stärcke in Amsterdam has sent me the first newspaper article on ΨA to appear in the Dutch language.4 Van Emden seems to be hesitating and dawdling as usual. Here in the Vienna Society everything is all right. Recently a young Viennese (Dr. Schrötter)5 provided experimental confirmation of our dream symbolism—more or less against his will. He suggested to his hypnotized patients that they dream of sexual or homosexual intercourse, and they did so in the symbols known to us, of which, I am assured, they had no knowledge
