January 4, 1894
IX., Berggasse 19
Dearest friend,
In the last issue of Revue neurologique I read an announcement of “Les réflexes d'origine nasale,” by a certain W. Fliess in Arch. internat. de laryng., rhinol., …, Sept. — Oct. 1893.1 Could that be you, and you did not send it to me?
Next time you will receive (in manuscript) a piece of the theory of neuroses (phobias, obsessions).2
Cordial greetings.
Your
Sigm. Freud
The article appeared in Archives de laryngologie, 6 (1893):266-269, Travail lu au Congrès de médecine interne de Wiesbaden. It is only a French summary, by Fliess himself, of his longer article in German, “Die nasale Reflexneurose.”
See note 1 to letter of January 30, 1894. Freud gave a lecture titled “Die Abwehr-Neuropsychosen” to the Verein für Psychiatrie und Neurologie on January 15, 1895. An Autorreferat, “Über den ‘Mechanismus der Zwangsvorstellungen und Phobien,’” was published in the Wiener klinische Wochenschrift. This one-page report was (later?) expanded to “Obsessions et phobies (leur mécanisme psychique et leur étiologie),” published on January 30.
