Prof. Dr. Freud
Dear Dr. Binswanger,
Many thanks for your father analysis, which certainly needs no apology. Reading more into it is made harder for me by a factor to which I shall be returning. Ferenczi was probably not so happy to be travelling with me as to excite envy.1 I rather tend to let myself go during holidays and am far from sparkling all the time, and he was most amiable if a little constrained.
I have now written to Bleuler myself asking for enlightenment, since I reallya do not understand why he dissociates himself from the Association. I do not expect to be able to influence him, but Ib thought he would after all take offence if I failed to get in direct touch with him.
Frau G. (if that is how she spells her name) was my patient for 6 weeks. She broke off the treatment ostensibly because of the high fees (!), i.e., the treatment was not to the advantage of her husband, who is a dubious fellow. I came to see her during that period as a case badly consumed by passion. When I took her case history, the husband had the effrontery to withhold the fact that when she left a mental home fairly recently (about one and a half years ago) she put a bullet in her skull which is still lodged there. She herself never confessed that before this marriage she had done something bad connected with an earlier relationship. I only heard about it from her family doctor (discretion). The husband now drags her by her guilty conscience as if by a chain. One ought to take this up with him and she would surely leave her chum in the lurch. The doctor, for whose sake she shot herself, had intercourse with her, of course, probably not without encouragement
I have not yet seen v. T.; he spent a very blissful summer with his bosom friend, probably highly manic already.
I promised to return to something. It is, dear Doctor, your horrible, schizophrenically repelling handwriting,2 which is designed to be indecipherable and which is as much a negative
