Dear Professor,
Herr Hu., whom you so kindly referred to us, has very quickly settled in here and made the transference to me. He sees the events in Vienna fairly critically, but still shows signs of persecution ideas and keeps on reproaching himself for his daft behaviour which has made him the plaything of society; everyone has made a fool of him and wants to put him to the test. I do not doubt that the man will be capable of work again in a few months’ time, whether he can return to Vienna we must consider later. To the family I spoke of two months, but it could indeed last even twice that long. I have installed him in an open house with a private attendant. He still often gets anxious at night, gets out of bed, talks and laughs to himself and talks of suicide. When he does stay in bed completely he allows himself to be influenced for the good for hours at a time. In my opinion it is a clear case of dementia praecox combined with a good intellect, but with an emotional life which has remained infantile. The infantile is what occurs to him first. He seems also to have a strong mother complex, only women he knows to be unattainable stimulate him, for preference he takes up with an archduchess. A homosexual component shows itself clearly. This kind of dementia praecox case particularly interests me. Such phases point particularly clearly to a psychogenic mechanism. I now know several cases who became ill with depression or a confused state in connection with an unhappy love life. It is clear then that the mother complex and the homosexual elements have wrecked the love life and precisely in such cases I clearly saw persecution ideas and homosexuality arising. By the way, in our case here it also has to be taken into account that the woman in question must have been a right little minx.
I am treating Frau G. at the moment while Dr. von Holst1 is on holiday. I should much rather send her back to you. Her husband is coming at Christmas, then we can tal
