Dear Dr. Binswanger,
I was tempted by a line in your letter to send a telegram to Constance: [I] too am in ‘Italy’!1 Come and see me at the Hotel Eden, Via Ludovisi. The reason I held back was due only in part to the realisation that my company would not be relaxing but strenuous for you; the more pressing reason was that I was in a very poor state myself. I have been through several weeks of wretched health, with the diagnosis uncertain as ever. If one may judge ex juvantibus,2 after Karlsbad I was suddenly unable to tolerate my normal smoking and the drinking that was added to it in the Tyrol. So I suppose my heart rebelled; everyone will attribute that to psychic influences, but please don't blame Jung too much. Anyway, I am recuperating here after various relapses and now feel, having all but forsworn the noble Roman wine as well, that I am on the road back to my former self. I am very happy in Rome, as I am in fact each time I come here, and this time particularly so.
