Prof. Dr. Freud
Dear Dr. Binswanger,
You will surely have returned home by now, with the summer behind you like a beautiful dream. That is true of me too; not everything in the dream was beautiful, but the last scene in Rome certainly was.
When your letter from Milan arrived, I had already bought my ticket for the sleeper, so was unable to change anything and resigned myself to missing you in Venice. I hope you greatly enjoyed both it and your wife's response to the beauty of Italy.
Everything at home is fine now, myself included. I am working extremely well already, and the refreshed state in which I have returned has inspired several more literary projects.1 The ‘Points of Agreement’2 for Imago must be made ready, and all sorts of other matters requiring my attention are bound to crop up at the same time.
I do not want to withhold from you a piece of news that is both surprising and gratifying. Kraus3 in Berlin, who is about to publish a new textbook of internal medicine in 10 volumes, has offered me hysteria and obsessional neurosis.4 I have accepted and have thus lived to see psychoanalysis being made official in Berlin.
Your own work5 should really be finished this year. It is perhaps the most propitious moment for it.
I hear occasionally from Maeder and Riklin and leave them in no doubt in my replies as to my critical attitude.
