Prof. Dr. Freud
Dear Dr. Binswanger,
Many thanks for your information about Frau F. I think you would do well to pursue the trail of her identification with her sister-in-law - of which I know nothing - by analytical methods. Herr F. drew my attention to the fact that his wife could only be persuaded to go to the clinic on the pretext that she would receive treatment for Graves’ disease, so it would be wise to allay any suspicions by a make-believe treatment for that condition.
For the rest, I have to tell you that I have got rid of Stekel.1 I have left him the Zentralblatt and am about to establish a new journal myself. All my friends will shortly be withdrawing their names from his masthead. I would ask you too not to send any contributions over which you have any influence to the Zentralblatt but to reserve them for my new journal.
With kind regards to you and your family,
Yours ever, Freud
A disagreement had arisen between Freud and Stekel early in 1912. As a defence against Jung's diverging views, Freud wanted to set up a ‘review board’ for the Zentralblatt (Reitler, Hitschmann, Tausk, Federn, Ferenczi) which in particular was to review the Jahrbuch from Freud's point of view (letter of 17 October 1912 from Freud to Ferenczi, 1992g, p. 411.). But Stekel declared he would never concede to having Dr. Tausk write in his journal (letter of 27 October 1912 from Freud to Ferenczi, 1992g, p. 418). Because Bergmann, the publisher, did not agree to Stekel's dismissal as editor, Freud founded the Internationale Zeitschrift für ärtzliche Psychoanalyse. Cf. the somewhat imprecise presentation in Jones (1953-7), Vol. 2, p. 109. Stekel's departure from the Association was announced on 6 November 1912; see Protokolle, Vol. 4, p. 108 and note 2. [In the Engl. edn., Minutes, Vol. 4, p. 113, the relevant words ‘Stekel resigned’ are missing, as also is note 2 — T.R.] Cf. also On the History of the Psycho-Analytic Movement, S
