Constance, 22 June 1914

Dear Professor Freud,
Many thanks for your letter of 19 June. I should be grateful if you would let me know, in due course, when approximately the next issue of the Jahrbuch is due to appear. - I am very much looking forward to your promised work.
I have been back in harness, which I am still finding rather hard going, since the 18th. I am neither peevish nor is there any cause for concern; it was probably no more than a case of nicotine poisoning1 with cerebral and cardiac symptoms. I still suffer a little from giddiness and get tired very easily, but feel better back at work than if I were doing nothing at all.
With kind regards, and in unchanging affection, I am, dear Professor,
Yours, [L. Binswanger]
In Ludwig Binswanger's diary (II, pp. 5-8) under the date 12 June 1917 there is a dramatic report of renewed nicotine poisoning: ‘First acute nicotine poisoning for three years. Vascular character more clearly expressed than last time.’
