Dear Professor Freud,
At yesterday's meeting of the Swiss Psychiatric Society in Zurich, I, as the current president, proposed that you be made an honorary member1 in the place of the late Professor Kraepelin,2 adding that though it was a disgrace that we had not done so long ago, it were better done late than never. My motion received unanimous approval and you will be notified of your appointment within the next few days. I would just add that I know perfectly well that such an honour would have given you pleasure a generation or even twenty years ago, but that such things no longer make any impression at all upon you. The pleasure and honour are thus ours rather than yours.
But perhaps giving pleasure to others, and to me in particular, will not leave you indifferent even today!
I gather that the German psychiatrists will be arriving in Vienna as early as April.3 But they have so little to offer that I shall probably wait until September and join the neurologists instead.4
With kind regards,
As always, yours [L. Binswanger]
The copy of Binswanger's official invitation to Freud of the same date, as President of the Swiss Society for Psychiatry, has also survived in the Binswanger Archive (B.A. 443/90, 85):
