Prof. Dr. Freud
Dear Dr. Binswanger,
It appears certain that I shall not be seeing Switzerland again, no. I am already aware that Constance lies on Lake Constance and proclaimed
this fact publicly not long ago.1 The garden of Villa Schüler on the Semmering is ready to receive you whenever you feel the need to have a discussion with your old friend.
I am glad to hear that all is well with you.
Very cordially yours, Freud
In The Future of an Illusion Freud writes by way of illustration of ‘teachings’: ‘We are told that the town of Constance lies on the Bodensee [the German name for what in English is called Lake Constance]. A student song adds: “if you don't believe it, go and see.” I happen to have been there and can confirm the fact that that lovely town lies on the shore of a wide stretch of water which all those who live round it call the Bodensee.’ (1927c) S.E., Vol. XXI, p. 25.
