[To Anna Freud]
Dear Fräulein Anna,
Frau Dr. Grete Ruben,1 an analyst trained in Berlin, a very intelligent and trustworthy lady whom I have known very well for many years, a non-Aryan, has now had to give up her flourishing psychoanalytic practice in Milan and is thinking of going to England. She may perhaps appeal to you in person. I would commend her to you most strongly as a very bravely struggling woman and mother. You can rely on her in every respect, both professionally and personally.
Please tell your dear father that he gave me very great pleasure with his letter from England. Since scarcely a day goes by that I do not think of him, his letter was happy new proof of his friendship, and a great relief.
With kindest regards to your parents and to yourself,
Yours most sincerely, [L. Binswanger]
Margarete Ruben (…-1981), Psychoanalyst, her membership of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society was formally transferred to the British on 6 November 1940; she emigrated to Los Angeles in the 1950s. Anna Freud wrote a Preface to her book Parent Guidance in the Nursery School, New York, 1960. [I am indebted to Jill Duncan of the British Institute of Psycho-Analysis for most of this information.
