[added by hand]
Dear Dr. Binswanger,
Please accept my profound, heartfelt thanks for the warmth and kindness of your letter following our very sad loss. It is only now that we have come to appreciate fully how much he was loved and revered, for we have received touching expressions of this from all over the world. What a good thing, dear Dr. Binswanger, that you knew him when he was still in the prime of life, for at the end he suffered so terribly that even those who would have loved to have kept him forever longed for his release.
And yet how terribly hard it is to have to manage without him: to carry on without all that kindness and wisdom at one's side. It is small consolation for me to know that in the fifty-three years of our marriage we had not one angry word, and that I did my best at all times to spare him everyday worries. Now my life has lost all substance and meaning.
