Vienna IX, Berggasse 19
April 2, 1896
My dear Wilhelm
… If we are both granted a few more years of quiet work, we shall certainly leave behind us something that will justify our existence. It is this knowledge that strengthens me to face all the
worries and cares of daily life. As a young man my only longing was for philosophical knowledge, and now that I am changing over from medicine to psychology I am in the process of fulfilling this wish. I became a therapist against my will; I am convinced that, given certain conditions in the person and the case, I can definitely cure hysteria and obsessional neurosis.
So till we meet again. We have honestly earned a few beautiful days together.
When you say goodbye to your wife and son at Easter, please greet them on my behalf.
Your
Sigm.
