Vienna IX, Berggasse 19
May 3, 1908
Dear Mr. Zweig
I was absent from Vienna during the beginning of last week and on my return found so much work to catch up on that I had to postpone thanking you for your kind gift.1 I know that you are a poet from reading the Frühen Kränze [Early Wreaths]2 and the sounds of the fine powerful verses which come flowing toward me whenever I open the book promise me an hour of pleasure which I shall very soon try to steal from the relentless work. I can guess the connection, and not that you are charitable enough to kill off the man who, according to the ancient poets, returned from Troy unscathed.
Accept my best thanks once more
Yours very sincerely
Freud
