Vienna, IX, Berggasse 19

Dear Alex
Today I had a conversation with Dolfi1 which causes me to make a suggestion about solving mother's difficulties. As you know, she is quite incapable of getting accustomed to the new value of money; she refuses to leave the financial arrangements to Dolfi, and torments her terribly every time money has to be spent. But Dolfi hasn't much energy left.
So I suggest that Dolfi, unknown to mother, be given a sum enabling her to keep the household going without our old lady realizing the expenses. The five hundred kronen which I sent Dolfi in March, in addition to the usual sum, have already been spent; I now suggest that we each contribute a thousand.
In any case we have to find summer lodgings for them not far from the city, where we can pay all the expenses so that they won't have to count every penny. You realize as well as I do that a summer will come when we won't have the chance of repeating the assistance.
Today I gave the bank orders to send you the quarterly contribution.
I greet you affectionately and await your reply.
Your
Sigm.
Freud's sister Dolfi, who had remained unmarried and lived with her mother.
