Vienna IX, Berggasse 19
May 13, 1926
My dear Frau Breuer
The lines with which you congratulate me on my seventieth birthday have moved me most deeply. The black-edged notepaper reminded me with lightning speed of everything from the moment when, glancing through the door of the consulting room, I first saw you sitting at the table with a barely two-year-old daughter, through
all the years when I could almost count myself a member of your family, and the various vicissitudes my life has known since then. Please accept from me in remembrance of this past my most respectful thanks.
Most cordially
Your
Freud
