Dear Friend
My cordial thanks for sending me your most recent work.1 I now possess the complete series of your valuable studies, most of them with your inscription, except for Volume IV (Seven Selections). Does it make any sense for a man of my age to try and fill his library? At best in the interest of his heirs. Life already lies heavy on my shoulders and I feel in no way privileged to have reached an age attainable only by a few. I continue with my professional work partly because I have to, but the material no longer shapes itself into coherent systems, no longer submits to ideas which used to appear out of the unknown. Im Austragstüberl,2 it is called in our Alpine regions.
