Dear Professor Baumgardt
I am confirming the receipt of your impressive book1 im-mediately after its arrival. If I were to wait until I had read it, it might take too long. But read it I certainly will, and I hope to learn much from it and even to find in it the solution to the little problem for which I was going to ask you myself.
One of the teachers during my scientific childhood once assured me that he never read anything by people whom he did not know, and that after having made their personal acquaintance he could usually spare himself the reading of their publications. Applying this to our case, I say that after having made your acquaintance I can read your book without fear and compunction.
With warm greetings to you and your wife
