Dear Jones
It still remains surprising to me how little we human beings can foresee the future. When, shortly before the war, you told me about founding a Psychoanalytical Society in London, I could not foresee that a quarter of a century later I would be living so near to it and to you; even less would I have thought it possible that I,
in spite of living so near, would not be taking part in your celebration.
But in our helplessness we have to accept everything as fate brings it to us. Thus I have to content myself with sending your celebrating Society a cordial greeting and hearty good wishes from afar and yet so near. The events of recent years have made London the principal site and center of the psychoanalytical movement. May the Society carry out the functions thus falling to it in the most brilliant manner.
