Dear Mr. Schaeffer
What an unexpected and welcome letter! How often have I thought of my poet during these in some respects empty times, and wondered to what corner of the wild upheaval current events in his fatherland have cast him! It gave me deep pleasure to learn that what I had feared has not occurred and that you have found such an invaluable partner in your wife.
Not everything I could tell you about myself would coincide with your wishes. But I am more than eighty-three years old, thus actually overdue, and there is really nothing left for me but to follow your poem's advice: Wait, wait.
Yours very sincerely
Freud
