Dear Colleague,
I wish you the best of luck for this year, in which you will begin to build yourself a position in Berlin, and I am delighted to conclude from all the signs that you have the right companion at your side.
As for the Görlitz patient. His parents, good souls, did, however, induce me to make the journey to the institution only by concealing something. Only once there did I find out that he also hallucinates voices, and thus exceeds the frame of hysteria/obsessional neurosis. I observed one attack myself, it is immensely instructive in that it represents a coitus or, rather, his rage at such an act of coitus observed by him [obviously between the parents].1 His spitting is sperm-ejaculation. The whole thing is very transparent; tragic for his fate, and of extreme interest for our views, is the organic accompaniment of and reason for his repudiation of sexuality—the infantility of his genitals. It was because of the latter that I held out so little hope of recovery to his parents; but then they will be very content with improvements. There is surely no doubt that the case must be regarded as dementia præcox; but the relationship of the latter to hysteria and obsessional neurosis undeniably also comes to the fore.
I am very eager for your further communications, whether the young woman came to you, and many other things.
My family thank you for your greetings, and your wife's in particular.
A happy 1908,
your very devoted
Dr Freud
